Wayne Gretzky wasted no time proving that he was "The Great One". The 1979 - 80 NHL season was both the Oilers and Gretzky's first seasons in the NHL. While the team finished with a respectable 28 - 39 - 13 record . Gretzky was more than respectable. Gretzky finished the season with 137 points . 51 goals and 86 assists . tied for the league lead with Marcel Dionne. The 86 assists also led the league . and to this day . 137 points is still the record for most points scored by a first year player. While the jersey looks the same as the later Oilers jerseys that we make . there are differences: the sleeve numbers . the back twill and the back name font to name a few. This jersey also features a patch celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the City of Edmonton.
